Stella Chiweshe

Stella Chiweshe, the Mbira Queen of Zimbabwe not only introduced the combination of mbira and marimba into the modern Zimbabwe soundscape, but she is the only woman in her home country to lead her own band. Playing since the early 70’s she has released more than 20 singles of Mbira music of which her first single ‘Kasahwa’ went gold in 1975.

She was invited to become a member of the original National Dance Company of Zimbabwe, where she soon took the part of a leading Mbira Solo player, dancer and actress.  Her Solo work has established her as one of the most original artists in the contemporary African scene using mbira music to share the depth and power of traditional spiritual music.  From 1982 she has toured internationally, having performed in Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, Congo Brazzaville, Zanzibar. Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czech-Republic, Slovenia, Serbia, India, China, Korea, England, Ireland, France, Orkney Islands, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Austria, New Zealand, Australia, USA, Spain and Canary Islands, and in Croatia.  In 2005 she won the Zimbabwe Silver Jubilee Awards (ZIMA Awards) for her ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Music Industry’ and  ‘Best Female Mbira Player’.

MBIRA - the spiritual instrument of Zimbabwe has been used for religious and entertainment purposes for hundreds of years. The sound is produced from rows of iron keys, flattened at the playing end, attached to a wooden board and then fixed into a calabash for resonance. It is often placed inside a large gourd for further amplification.
Tune into the sound of the mbira; a sound that will immerse you in the depths of African knowledge of the spirits. Stella Chiweshe, the Mbira Queen of
Zimbabwe, carries you from mourning to revolt, from suffering to spiritual prowess.

" The music glides and winds its way through hills and rivers, it creates valleys and forests and leaves everyone taking stock of their self-value."The Zimbabwe Mirror

"It's so very good to welcome back the purveyor of some of the finest music you'll ever hear as the Mbira Queen of Zimbabwe takes us through a journey of life, from pain to healing." The Vibe, UK
